AWARENESS AND IMPLEMENTATION WEBINAR ON “INDIAN STANDARDS ON  ROPES & CORDAGES AND QCOs” ON THURSDAY, 30 JANUARY 2025 

Textiles Department, Bureau of Indian Standards, New Delhi organized the Awareness and  Implementation Webinar on Indian Standards on Ropes & Cordages and QCOs” on  Thursday, 30 January 2025 through virtual mode. The webinar was attended by about 61  participants representing various stakeholders from the industry.  

Shri J K Gupta, Head Textiles welcomed all the delegates from Industry/trade and briefed them about the program objectives. He highlighted the important standards on Ropes & Cordages brought under  QCO by the Ministry of Textiles and appealed to the stakeholders to implement Indian Standards in their domain areas and to opt for the BIS Certification & conformity assessment scheme, to gain users' confidence. He also highlighted the recent initiatives taken by the BIS in the field of 

Standardization includes Digitalization of standard development platform, Review of Indian  Standards through Action Research Projects and R&D projects, Extensive participation at ISO/IEC  levels, MoU with Academic institutions, and formulation of Standardization cells in Ministries and  Industry Associations.  

A detailed presentation on ‘Salient Feature of Indian Standards on Ropes & Cordages Product  Brought under QCO’ was delivered by Shri Amit Kumar Pandey, Scientist B, Textiles. He  apprised the delegates about the salient features, performance requirements, and test method of the  following important Indian standards brought under quality control order by the Ministry of Textiles:  

1) IS 1084: 2005 Textiles – Manila ropes – Specification (fifth revision  

2) IS 11066: 2022/ISO 1141:2021 Fibre ropes – Polyester - 3-, 4-, 8- and 12- strand ropes  (third revision)  

3) IS 14928: 2001 Textiles – Composite synthetic fibre ropes – Specifications 
4) IS 14929: 2022 Textiles – Mixed Polyolefin Fibre Ropes - Specifications 
5) IS 4572: 2022 Fibre ropes – Polyamide - 3-, 4-, 8- and 12- strand ropes  

6) IS 5175:2022 Fibre Ropes — Polypropylene Split Film, Monofilament and Multifilament  (PP2) and Polypropylene High-Tenacity Multifilament (PP3) —3-, 4-, 8- and 12- Strand  Ropes  

7) IS 8674: 2013 Fibre Ropes — Polyethylene — 3- and 4-StrandRopes  

8) IS 17609: 2021 Fibre Ropes — Polyester / Polyolefin dual fibres  

9) IS 15041: 2001 Textiles - Flat woven webbing slings made of man-made fibers for general  services  

10) IS 1804: 2004 Steel Wire Ropes - Fibre Main Cores – Specification  

A detailed presentation on ‘Overview of BIS Certification (Scheme-I) with a focus on Ropes &  Cordages products’ was delivered by Shri Harish Meena, Scientist-B, CMD-2 BIS. In his presentation, Shri Meena briefed the participants about the Scheme-1 of BIS Conformity  Assessment for the grant of a license, documents required for applying for a license, the concession of marking fees for the SME sector, cluster base test facility, the procedure for applying for BIS license on Manak online portal, etc.  

A brief Question and Answer Session was also conducted, after the presentations, in which all the attendees had participated actively. During the session, several issues related to the Indian  Standards on ropes & cordages and the BIS certification procedure along with the impact of QCOs on the imports of sub-standard quality were raised which were resolved successfully. The technical comments raised during the session on the Indian Standards were noted for necessary consideration in the Cordage Sectional Committee, TXD 09.
