Smart Grids and Urban Planning: Smart grids, which modernize electrical grids using advanced technologies, align closely with urban planning principles aimed at creating energy-efficient cities. Shukla explains how smart grids can contribute to this goal:

  • Demand Management: Smart grids enable real-time monitoring of energy consumption, allowing urban planners to optimize energy demand through load balancing and demand response programs.

  • Renewable Energy Integration: Smart grids facilitate the seamless integration of renewable energy sources, such as solar panels and wind turbines, into urban energy networks.

  • Distributed Energy Resources: These grids support the integration of distributed energy resources like rooftop solar panels and electric vehicle charging stations.

  • Real-time Monitoring and Control: Smart grids provide real-time data on energy flows and grid performance, helping urban planners make informed decisions.

Implementing Uttar Pradesh’s Solar Energy Policy: The Uttar Pradesh Solar Energy Policy-2022 aims to achieve 22,000 Megawatts by 2026-2027, with 6,000 Megawatts from solar rooftop systems. Key initiatives include:

  • Development of 16 Solar Cities with solar rooftop systems on approximately 1.35 million houses.
  • Creation of land banks in the Bundelkhand region for solar power projects.
  • Deemed permission for changing land use from agriculture to non-agriculture for solar projects.
  • A Green Energy Corridor capacity of 4,000 MW for efficient power evacuation in Bundelkhand.

Innovations Driving Sustainability: Shukla highlights the role of demand-side energy savings in driving innovation for sustainability. He emphasizes efficiency improvements in energy production and the transition to renewable energy sources as key drivers.

India’s Global Contribution: India is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and promoting clean energy. Initiatives include a target of 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030, reducing carbon intensity, and achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. The government is actively promoting electric vehicles and renewable energy adoption.

Challenges and Solutions in Renewable Energy: Shukla discusses challenges in implementing renewable energy, such as economics, lack of energy storage, and land-use conflicts.
