Tambaram Corporation Allocates Rs 54 Crore to Illuminate Streets with Eco-Friendly LED Lights
CHENNAI: Residents in Tambaram can finally breathe a sigh of relief as the Tambaram Corporation takes action to address the longstanding issue of poor street lighting. Kamala Devi, a 45-year-old vendor, and a group of students from Madras Christian College were among those who faced difficulties navigating poorly lit streets after dusk. The lack of functional street lights not only inconvenienced commuters but also raised safety concerns for those walking home late at night.
To remedy the situation, the Tambaram Corporation has allocated a significant budget of Rs 54 crore for the installation, repair, and upgrade of light poles with eco-friendly LED lights in all zones under its jurisdiction. The move to LED lights is both environmentally friendly and cost-effective, as they are known to save power.
R. Alagumeena, the corporation commissioner, highlighted the importance of switching to LED lights, considering the vast network of over 900 km of roads in Tambaram corporation, each with different street lighting setups. Work has already commenced on the Grand Southern Trunk road, and Alagumeena expressed optimism that the project would be completed within three months.
The existing street lights, which include sodium vapour, mercury vapour, and tubelights, have been a drain on resources, with more than 40,000 of them in operation. Most of these lamps are either non-functional or in poor condition, necessitating immediate attention and replacement.
The decision to replace these conventional lights with energy-efficient LED lights will not only enhance the overall safety and convenience for residents but also lead to cost savings in the long run. The move aligns with the corporation’s commitment to a greener and more sustainable environment.
Tambaram’s residents eagerly await the completion of this much-needed initiative, hoping that the installation of LED lights will bring an end to their longstanding struggle with inadequate street lighting.
