FSSAI Evaluates WHO Guidelines on Sweeteners Amid Concerns of Carcinogenic Potential

Date: July 7, 2023

In response to recent reports suggesting that the artificial sweetener aspartame may be classified as a possible carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has announced its intention to assess the impact of non-sugar sweeteners on the Indian population. FSSAI, an Indian regulatory body responsible for ensuring food safety and standards, plans to form an expert panel and engage with stakeholders before drawing any conclusions regarding the adverse effects of these additives commonly used in foods and beverages.

H.S. Oberoi, an advisor at FSSAI, emphasized the importance of considering the Indian perspective and conducting comprehensive studies specifically tailored to the Indian population. Oberoi stated that the FSSAI panel, which includes experts such as renowned endocrinologist Dr. Shashank Joshi, is currently deliberating on the matter. By analyzing data and information pertaining to the consumption of aspartame and other non-sugar sweeteners in India, FSSAI aims to make informed decisions regarding the formulation of standards and thresholds for these additives.

FSSAI has a well-established process for setting standards, which involves extensive consultations with stakeholders, including the beverage industry. Oberoi highlighted the robustness of FSSAI’s mechanism, stating that scientific evidence plays a crucial role in the decision-making process. This approach ensures that the standards and limits set by FSSAI align with the Indian context and cater to the specific needs of the Indian population.

The concerns surrounding the potential carcinogenicity of aspartame and the adverse effects of non-sugar sweeteners have raised significant questions for the beverage industry. Many low-sugar and zero-calorie beverages heavily rely on these sweeteners, which consumers have increasingly embraced over the years.

In response to the controversy, Sundeep Bajoria, Vice President of Coca-Cola India, commented on the extensively researched nature of aspartame as an ingredient. He stated that aspartame has undergone comprehensive research globally, including in the European Union, the United States, and India. Bajoria refrained from commenting further until the release of the WHO findings on July 14, which will provide more clarity on the matter.

As the FSSAI continues its assessment and stakeholders eagerly await the WHO’s official report, it is expected that these developments will prompt further discussions and research on the use of non-sugar sweeteners, particularly aspartame, in the Indian food and beverage industry.
