Introduction: In a recent raid conducted by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in Chennai, a shocking discovery was made at the Viva Foods and Beverages Unit in Kodambakkam. A team from the BIS Chennai branch office seized a total of 47 packaged drinking water containers bearing counterfeit ISI marks. This incident has raised concerns about the authenticity and safety of packaged drinking water in the region.

Details of the Raid: During the operation, officials uncovered 20-litre water containers that were falsely labeled with ISI marks, indicating conformity to Indian quality standards. The containers featured multiple brand names, and BIS license numbers from various manufacturers were also found. It was revealed that the company, Viva Foods and Beverages Unit, was operating without a valid BIS license, thus violating the BIS Act 2016.

Legal Consequences: The use of fake ISI marks is a serious offense, as it compromises the safety and trust associated with these quality standards. According to a press release issued by the BIS, the violation is punishable by imprisonment of up to two years or a fine not less than ₹2 lakh. In some cases, the fine can even be up to 10 times the value of the goods or articles produced or sold by the offending party.

Reporting Misuse of ISI Mark: The BIS has urged residents to be vigilant and report any instances of ISI mark misuse to the BIS Chennai branch office. Reports can be made at the following address: CIT Campus, 4th Cross Road, Taramani. By reporting such incidents, citizens can play an active role in maintaining the integrity of quality standards and ensuring the safety of consumers.

Conclusion: The discovery of 47 packaged drinking water containers with fake ISI marks in Chennai has exposed a grave breach of quality standards. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to proper regulations and the need for strict enforcement to safeguard consumer interests. The BIS’s swift action in seizing these containers highlights their commitment to maintaining the integrity of the ISI mark and ensuring public safety. It is essential for authorities to continue their efforts to identify and penalize those involved in such fraudulent practices, thereby preserving the trust consumers place in certified products.
