BIS Officials Raid Manufacturing Unit in Mumbai, Seize Large Quantity of Uncertified LED Control Gear

In a recent enforcement raid, officials from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Mumbai Branch Office, took action against a manufacturing unit located in Kandivali East, Mumbai. The raid, conducted on July 3, 2023, resulted in the seizure of a significant stockpile of control gear for LED modules that lacked BIS certification.

Acting swiftly on credible information pertaining to the violation of the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Quality Control Order 2021, a team of officials from BIS Mumbai Branch Office-I conducted the operation at M/s JSK Innovative Technology Private Limited. The manufacturing unit, situated at C-207, 2nd Floor, Jai Bonanza Industrial Estate, Ashok Chakravarti Road, Kandivali East, Mumbai, was found to be involved in the production, storage, and sale of electronic control gear for LED modules without the required BIS certification, specifically in accordance with IS 15885 (Part 2/Sec 13). This violation constitutes a breach of the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Quality Control Order 2021.

During the raid, a substantial quantity of uncertified electronic control gear, along with their labels, was discovered and subsequently confiscated. This action was taken in accordance with Section 17(1)(a) of the BIS Act 2016, which identifies such violations. The offense outlined in Section 17(1)(a) of the BIS Act 2016 is punishable by imprisonment for up to two years, a minimum fine of Rs. 2,00,000, or both. Steps are being taken to initiate legal proceedings against the company for this violation.

To ensure consumer awareness and protection, all individuals are strongly encouraged to utilize the BIS CARE App, available on both Android and iOS platforms. This app allows users to access a list of mandatory products that must possess BIS certification. Furthermore, consumers are urged to verify the authenticity of the ISI Mark on products by visiting the BIS website (http://www.bis.gov.in) prior to making a purchase. Should anyone come across instances where mandatory products are being sold without BIS certification or misuse of the ISI Mark is observed, they are requested to report such cases to the Head of MUBO-I, Western Regional Office (BIS, 5th Floor, CETTM Complex, Hiranandani Gardens, Powai, Mumbai – 400076) or via email at hmubol@bis.gov.in. The source of such information will be kept confidential.

Citizens are advised to refer to the BIS Act 2016 to learn about the penalties and obligations imposed on license holders, sellers, and others involved in such activities.
