Dubai has undertaken a significant initiative to enhance its road infrastructure by replacing over 14,000 road lights with more environmentally friendly alternatives. The recent upgrade covered a distance of 22.6 kilometers and encompassed 39 tunnels and crossings.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai expressed its commitment to promoting a cleaner environment as it announced the installation of 14,400 LED lights. Maitha bin Adai, the Chief Executive of the RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, highlighted the key features of this project. It involved the renovation of numerous prominent tunnels in Dubai, including the airport tunnel, Shindagha tunnel, Dubai Mall tunnel, and Dubai World Trade Centre tunnel.

The primary objective of the project was to replace outdated tunnel lighting units and night road crossings with sustainable, eco-friendly LED lights. LED lighting units have a multitude of eco-friendly benefits. They consume 60% less energy compared to traditional lighting units and offer a significantly longer lifespan, up to 177% more than older lights.

The new LED lights boast an impressive lifespan of 50,000 hours, in contrast to conventional lighting units that last only 18,000 hours. This extended lifespan reduces the need for frequent replacements, thereby minimizing maintenance and operational costs.

Moreover, the eco-friendly LED lights contribute to a 20% reduction in energy loss and heat emissions compared to traditional lamps. This improved efficiency benefits both the lighting operational system of the units and the energy supply network of the tunnels.

Dubai’s efforts to replace the existing road lights with eco-friendly LED alternatives demonstrate its commitment to sustainability and its dedication to creating a greener environment.
