IN-SPACe Establishes Framework to Advance Space Industry Standards in India

New Delhi, September 21 – IN-SPACe, the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre, has taken a significant stride towards bolstering the space industry standards in India. In collaboration with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), IN-SPACe has introduced a comprehensive framework called the “Catalogue of Indian Standards for Space Industry,” drawing inspiration from global benchmarks.

This significant unveiling took place during the inaugural session of the International Conference on Space 2023, organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). Rajeev Jyoti, Director of the Technical Directorate at IN-SPACe, had the honor of introducing the catalogue to the public.

The “Catalogue of Indian Standards for Space Industry” is a compilation of 15 standards meticulously developed by the BIS. These standards encompass a wide spectrum of domains, encompassing Space System Program Management strategies, Systems Engineering principles, and Product Assurance Mechanisms.

It’s worth noting that these standards are applicable across all sectors of the space industry, including satellites, launch systems, and ground systems. This comprehensive catalogue serves as a vital reference point for all stakeholders involved in India’s thriving space sector.

During the unveiling ceremony, Rajeev Jyoti underscored the significance of these standards. He pointed out that their introduction will not only elevate the global competitiveness of the Indian space industry but also ensure the production of highly reliable space products. Additionally, Jyoti highlighted that this catalogue represents a substantial leap towards aligning the Indian space industry with internationally accepted best practices.

Looking ahead, both IN-SPACe and BIS have ambitious plans to further expand the catalogue. Future volumes will cover an even broader range of domains, including space program management, security, and safety protocols, space transportation guidelines, design and testing methodologies, production standards, maintenance procedures, and operational guidelines.

In essence, the introduction of these standards not only signifies India’s commitment to excellence in space endeavors but also sets the stage for continued growth and innovation in the Indian space industry. It underlines the nation’s dedication to meeting global standards while fostering a robust and competitive space ecosystem. As India continues to make strides in the space sector, these standards will play a pivotal role in shaping its future as a prominent player in the global space community.
