BIS Introduces Quality Standards for Equipment in Ayurveda Treatment and Traditional Medicine

In a significant development, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has unveiled a set of standards for equipment used in Ayurvedic traditional therapies and traditional medicine. This move aims to ensure the quality of equipment and enhance the overall efficiency of the industry.

A meeting was conducted by BIS in Chennai, bringing together key stakeholders such as Ayurveda drug manufacturers and representatives from educational institutions. The primary focus was on creating awareness regarding standards associated with Panchakarma Equipment, including essential tools like droni and shirodhara yantra, crucial for various Ayurvedic procedures and treatments. Additionally, standards for Ashwagandha root specifications were also discussed.

Given the rising popularity of traditional treatment centers in the state, the establishment of standards becomes crucial to guarantee the well-being of patients. The standards being formulated by BIS’s Ayush department will outline the fundamental requirements for the equipment, stipulate appropriate materials, and introduce tests to maintain consistent quality.

Moreover, the standards will encompass Ashwagandha, a vital shrub used in combination with herbs for a range of medicinal purposes. These standards, designated as IS 18098:22, lay out approximately 20 criteria for the shrub. This includes rigorous testing for microbiological aspects and levels of pesticide residues, as outlined by officials.

BIS is actively engaged in identifying manufacturers, Ayurveda practitioners, and researchers specializing in Ayurvedic sciences. The aim is to sensitize them about these standards and encourage uniformity in the design and materials used, thus enhancing the effectiveness of treatments.

The standards recently introduced are part of a voluntary BIS certification program. Manufacturers are encouraged to register with BIS to obtain licenses, as this will not only improve the quality of their offerings but also contribute to the overall credibility of the Ayurveda industry. This forward-looking step is poised to bring about a positive transformation in the sector, ensuring that traditional practices are upheld while meeting modern quality benchmarks.
