Footwear Industry Calls for Accessible Testing Labs to Ensure Quality Compliance

Jalandhar, August 9, 2023 – The Jalandhar Rubber Goods Manufacturers Association has issued a plea to the government for the establishment of specialized laboratories at subsidized rates, catering specifically to micro and small industries. This initiative aims to assist these enterprises in evaluating and enhancing the quality of their products, ensuring compliance with Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) regulations.

During a significant meeting focused on the restructuring of BIS standards, presided over by the Minister of Commerce, Piyush Goyal, a delegation from the Association voiced concerns regarding the limited awareness among Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) about the functions and significance of the BIS department.

Rakesh Behl, a prominent representative of the Jalandhar Rubber Goods Manufacturers Association, highlighted Minister Piyush Goyal’s commitment to facilitating awareness and compliance. Minister Goyal announced forthcoming workshops by the Bureau of Indian Standards, aimed at enlightening industries about the importance of adhering to the BIS guidelines.

A pivotal announcement emerged from the meeting, with Minister Goyal unveiling plans for the establishment of 100 laboratories by December 2023, followed by an ambitious target of 500 labs by the end of 2024. These labs will serve as instrumental resources for businesses seeking to test and enhance the quality of their products, fostering a culture of excellence within the industry.

“The minister emphasized the imperative for the Jalandhar industry to elevate its standards, particularly in the realm of footwear production,” stated Rakesh Behl. He further conveyed Minister Goyal’s stern message that subpar footwear products would not be tolerated, underscoring the necessity for manufacturers to elevate their offerings to meet the minimum required standards. This concerted effort ensures that consumers are not subjected to substandard products, safeguarding their trust and satisfaction.

The collaboration between the Jalandhar Rubber Goods Manufacturers Association and the government stands poised to usher in a new era of quality assurance within the footwear industry. By providing accessible and affordable laboratory facilities, micro and small enterprises will be empowered to meet BIS regulations while delivering products of the highest caliber. This proactive step aligns with the broader goal of bolstering consumer confidence, fostering industry growth, and reinforcing the reputation of the Indian manufacturing sector.
