Government Imposes Compulsory Quality Standards to Boost Domestic Manufacturing
New Delhi: In a significant move to promote domestic manufacturing and curb the import of sub-standard goods, the government has rolled out mandatory quality norms for insulated flasks, bottles, and containers. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) issued a notification on July 14, enforcing quality control orders (QCO) for resin-treated compressed wood laminates and insulated domestic use items.
Under these new regulations, the production, sale, trade, import, and storage of insulated flasks, bottles, and containers without the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) mark are prohibited. This measure aims to ensure that only products meeting the specified quality standards are available in the market, thus protecting consumers and promoting the growth of domestic manufacturers.
The BIS Act, 2016, now mandates that non-BIS certified products cannot be manufactured, stored, or sold. Violation of these provisions can result in severe penalties. For the first offense, the guilty party may face imprisonment of up to two years or a minimum fine of Rs 2 lakh. Subsequent offenses will incur a minimum fine of Rs 5 lakh, which may extend up to ten times the value of the goods or articles involved.
This move is expected to bolster the domestic manufacturing sector by encouraging companies to adhere to quality standards set by the Bureau of Indian Standards. Additionally, it will protect consumers from sub-standard products and strengthen the overall market for insulated flasks, bottles, and containers in India.
Manufacturers and traders are advised to comply with the new quality norms to avoid penalties and ensure the availability of safe and high-quality products in the market. The government’s initiative is seen as a positive step towards enhancing the quality and safety of products circulating in the country.
